The Sundarbans and other coastal regions of West Bengal experienced the devastating effects of the cyclone Yaas — a tropical cyclone that hit Odisha and the eastern states toward the end of May 2021. The second cyclone to hit these states in consecutive years, brought strong winds and torrential rains that damaged crops and homes. The cyclone severely impacted livelihoods of those who were already reeling under the impact of the lockdown measures in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
As part of its charitable initiatives to help people affected by natural calamities, YSS extended support to some of those afflicted by the cyclone by offering relief material.
YSS Dakshineswar ashram received a request from a club in Rangabelia, one of the villages hit by the cyclone, to help the affected families. YSS provided the relief material to 500 families of Gosaba block in the Sundarbans area, South 24 Parganas district, on June 1, 2021. Vehicles carried relief material from YSS Dakshineswar ashram to a port, from where it was carried via boats to this village. The relief material included kits containing essential items such as rice, pulses, potatoes, biscuits, soya bean chunks, turmeric, soap, cooking oil, bleaching powder, etc. The relief work was carried out with due permission from the local administration, and with the assistance of local volunteers from the club.
We in Gurudeva's ashrams deeply pray that God and the Great Ones give the grieved ones strength and courage to cope with the aftermath of this tragedy.
