Gurudeva Sri Sri Paramahansa Yogananda graduated from Serampore College in June 1915. To commemorate the centenary of this event, Serampore College organized a seminar on "Yoga for Life Skill" on October 3, 2015. Swami Suddhananda and Brahmacharis Nigamananda and Achyutananda represented Yogoda Satsanga Society of India at the seminar.
Serampore College Principal, Prof. (Dr.) Laltluangliana Khiangte, while inaugurating the seminar said the College was proud that Mukunda Lal Ghosh, now revered worldwide as Paramahansa Yogananda, graduated from this college in June 1915 in the first batch of B.A. students.
Dr. Prabhakar Bhattacharyya of the Philosophy Department, and convener of the seminar, alluded to Paramahansa Yogananda as having excelled in para vidya (spiritual knowledge), while the college had offered him apara vidya (worldly knowledge). He expressed his joy that devotees of Paramahansa Yogananda consider Serampore College as a place of pilgrimage.
The YSS monks gave on overview of Gurudeva's life the principles of the Energization Exercises, affirmation and visualization, and Guruji's curriculum for how-to-live training. They also conducted a guided meditation. About 200 delegates attended this seminar.
Since 2005, two scholarships of Rs 5000 each, in honour of Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri and Paramahansa Yogananda have been awarded by YSS to graduate students of Serampore College excelling in Mathematics (Hons.), respectively. At the conclusion of the seminar, scholarships ofr the year 2015 were presented.
Two framed photographs of Yoganandaji were also presented to the College to be placed in the Philosophy Department.
To further commemorate the event, two large capacity water collers were donated for the students' use on October 9, 2015, at a programme attended by the Principal of Serampore College along with faculty and students. A set of books by Paramahansaji was also presented to the College Library.
